A 11.0592 MHz quartz crystal, providing a far more accurate and stable clock reference than a microcontroller's internal RC oscillator. This odd-looking frequency is chosen deliberately: it divides exactly into standard serial baud rates such as 9600, 19200 and 115200 with zero error. On an 8051 or similar, a round number like 12 MHz produces baud rate errors that cause corrupted serial data. A crystal needs two small load capacitors to ground, typically 18-22 pF, to oscillate correctly - without them the circuit may not start or may run at the wrong frequency. Keep the tracks between crystal and microcontroller as short as possible.
