Converts a microcontroller's TTL serial to RS485, the differential standard used throughout industrial installations. Where plain TTL serial fails after a couple of metres, RS485 runs reliably over a thousand metres of twisted pair and rejects the electrical noise around motors and drives. It also supports multi-drop, so many devices share one pair of wires. This is the physical layer beneath Modbus RTU, which is how you talk to PLCs, VFDs and industrial sensors.
