An industrial incremental encoder that reports shaft rotation as electrical pulses, for position feedback, speed measurement and length counting on machinery. At 100 pulses per revolution it resolves roughly 3.6 degrees per pulse in single-edge counting, or four times finer if you decode all quadrature edges. This lower resolution suits speed measurement and coarse position counting where fine detail is unnecessary and a slower controller would struggle to keep up with a faster pulse stream. The NPN open collector output needs a pull-up resistor to your logic supply, and because it is incremental rather than absolute, position is lost at power-off and must be re-referenced against a home switch.
