Measures how wet soil is by reading its electrical conductivity between two probes, giving an analogue value that falls as moisture rises. Be aware that bare-fork resistive probes corrode over weeks of continuous burial — the practical fix is to power the sensor only during a reading rather than leaving it energised, which extends its life dramatically.
